Best Surf Spots to Learn
Surfing is about as varied a sport as any but just like a clear coverage map, the best spots are, well, everywhere. Here are a few of our picks for the best in-country places to learn and improve your surfing technique:
Maui, HI: If you’ve got the funds and the time, make a pilgrimage to Maui to really learn the ropes. It’s the holy ground among the surfing elite and you can get a quality lesson and board rental for about the price of lunch.
San Diedo, CA: If you can’t make it all the way to Hawaii, stop over in San Diego to hit the waves. You won’t find any 10-footers but that’s okay, you only need the rolling, consistent surf of Cali to improve your form and really learn the basics.
Virginia Beach, VA: We picked this spot because not all surfers live on the west coast, right? VA Beach is an affordable and centrally-located vacation spot and it has got a surprisingly large surfing community. You can rent surf boards, get lessons and have some real alone time with the waves here.
